Justin Nafe is a Software Developer in Dallas TX. He graduated in December 2009 with a Bachelors degree in Computer Science from UNT’s College of Engineering.
Since Justin was not a good writer and had an aptitude for math based careers, Justin started college majoring in English. He wanted to prove to himself that he could be a good writer. Once he did well in all of his classes, he took a break to figure out a career choice.
Before deciding on a Computer Science career, Justin worked construction for Texas Electric. The “shock” of hard labor was a deciding factor to change professions. He would climb poles to hook up electricity to households and businesses but get shocked in the process. Not fun. He decided to major in Computer Science because he had no experience, but had a knack for math.
Going to school full time and working full time, he managed to pull off good grades and developed a few interesting programs. One program reads news articles and blogs about the stock market and attempts to determine the sentiment or polarity relating to the stock, industry, or market in general. Another program can be used to filter out spam voicemails on Asterisk phone systems.
After college, he continued to work as a Software Developer and wanted to continue his education. Big Data and Data Science caught his interest early. Not wanting to get further in debt, he decided to try Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). You can read about his course choices in his post Introduction to Data Science.
